Become more resilient and balanced

INTRODUCTION

We as medical professionals are dealing with immense pressure and human suffering, making our daily work lives more and more filled with gigantic stressors. Due to this increase in stress, there are more and more cases of burnout, depression, substance abuse, self-harm and suicide. Moreover, personal and professional relationships are affected in highly negative ways.

In this course we are outlining the problems and difficulties that are often part of a stressful working day for all of us, and offer some strategies and techniques to ward off and/or recover/improve from a state of burnout.

General Information

The material presented is sometimes repeated through various courses and modules, but there is a reason for that. What we are trying to do is to bring this material, these teachings, into our hearts and daily experience. Therefore, this is not like a classroom where you memorise it, take the exam and forget it. Our ultimate hope is for you to become more resilient, happy and whole, in the meantime growing compassion across the globe where it is needed the most.

Everything is impermanent, in a constant flux of change. Even during these unprecedented times, we will be able to turn the corner for brighter days. Stay strong, resilient and happy!

Gems of Success

We often focus on the things that went wrong in our lives, instead of giving at least equal weight to the positive, successful ones, the successful gems. It’s important to give equal weight to our activities. At the end of a busy and stressful working day, it is often the negative aspects of a day that remain, which is an off-balance and unrealistic end-of-day recollection. It is not healthy and it is a skewed view of our activities of the day.

MODULE HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Effects of focusing on the negative aspects of the day

Health Care Professionals vs. Superhero

Sometimes there are expectations out there that we are superheros, that we can answer every question, and take care of every imaginable problem that comes our way. Often, we even put this on ourselves, making ourselves into an action figure. As medical professionals, we are human, so it is very important to remember that at all times. We come from diverse backgrounds, yet have enjoyed years of training and varying degrees of professional experience. Working within our capabilities drawing on our skill sets, coupled with compassion and dedication, is what we can offer. However, this doesn’t mean that we can “fix” everything, heal everyone completely, and perform magic beyond what is realistic.

MODULE HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Effects of having unrealistic expectations
  • Strategies and techniques that can help alleviate stress from excessive expectations
