INTRODUCTION
We as medical professionals are dealing with immense pressure and human suffering, making our daily work lives more and more filled with gigantic stressors. Due to this increase in stress, there are more and more cases of burnout, depression, substance abuse, self-harm and suicide. Moreover, we often lose our motivation of helping others. Increasingly, this happens very early on, already during our medical education.
In this course we are outlining the problems and negative effects that losing our motivation can have, on us as medical professionals as well as our patients. More importantly, though, we will offer very practical methods and concepts on how to regain that original motivation of helping others.

Rediscovering Meaning in the Medical Profession
This module is about re-connecting with the altruistic core of our profession. Next to the wonderful and gratifying moments that we experience very day, there are plenty of difficult moments as we experience sickness, sadness, anger, desperation and fear. It is very hard to be immune from these environmental feelings from people and situations that we have to deal with. During medical studies for example, stress levels are so high that for many medical professionals to be, the original motivation of practicing medicine – helping others – is quickly lost and forgotten, through early burnout. However, don’t despair, the original motivation of doing what you do isn’t completely lost or forgotten, it’s still there and can be recovered!
